Trying to prevent dementia

:: Saturday, Apr 30th 2005 @ 20:43 :: Computer & Gadgets ::

One of my professors told us he changes the computer mouse to left side or right side every once in a while because making the brain work like that is supposed to prevent dementia later in life.

So, I’m trying to use the mouse with my left hand. Not because of the dementia thing, just as an experiment.

This is very difficult! The muscles on my left arm are already getting tense and the pointer is all over the place. But I’m not giving up.

    There was a girl where I used to work who sought my help at times. So I would sit at her desk, with the left-handed mouse, and go nuts.

    Even though I knew it was a left-handed mouse and would remember to do some stuff backwards (to me), I would without even thinking, click stuff with the wrong button - and do it again because it wasn’t working - and again.

    Very hard thing to get used to.

    I guess it is all relative though. My sister first used a mouse upside down, because that was how she thought it worked. Thing is, she has used it this way ever since. I try it and feel like I am standing upside down on a rolling stone. As I say - it is all relative :)

    A professor of mine tried to use the mouse with the wrong hand and right clicked around the screen all the time. When I changed my mouse hand I remembered to switch the buttons so that index finger is always the “main clicker”.

    But upside down, Shadow?! That’s mind-boggling. Isn’t the cord in the way? And the buttons are under one’s palm? Unless you mean that she used the ball under the mouse instead. I’ve heard stories about that misunderstanding.

    Some games have a sort of “upside down” looking-around (up turns the characters eyes down). I never master it well enough.
