Clueless

Yesterday I prepared a translation job that was so small (only 3 sentences) that I didn’t make a translation memory for each of the languages. However, the program needs a TM, so I instructed translators to just whip up an empty one. Today I got an email asking for help to one of our in-house translators; they said that they didn’t know how to make a TM because it wasn’t in their job description. How exactly isn’t it in their job description? If you’re a bus driver, you learn how to use the breaks and how to open the doors, right? If you’re a translator, you learn at least the very basics of the tool you use each and every day to do your job. Or, if that’s too much to ask, you check the damn Help menu! By mentioning “job description”, they also seemed to imply that because making TMs is part of my job description, I should’ve of course made it all ready for them. Well, I didn’t know some translators were so clueless.

(I do still love my job. :) )

    I had this kinda crap at one of the jobs I was on. All of a sudden I became the help desk for the different departments who didn’t know how to use their programs. You know, the programs they were required to use as part of their jobs each day.

    And in another job, the person whose job description included photocopying, always told me she was too busy to photocopy, so I’d leave it with her anyway, and say, “well, as soon as you have time… it’s not a rush”.

    She thought she didn’t have to do what was in her job description because she didn’t ‘like’ doing it.

    Hmm.. it makes you wonder sometimes.. :roll:
    ‘do they even know/care about their job’ seems like it isn’t the case :???:
