You know, they did! I’d completely forgotten about that because I took it quite sceptically when I read it. It always feels like there’s something in the shoe that is digging into my foot so I didn’t think two thin(-nish) socks would help that, but who knows! I’ll have to test it out on a short walk to the grocery store.

Didn't anyone suggest wearing two pairs of socks? The two socks provide a "slippery" layer so the skin on your ankle/heel doesn't have to give. Works with fancy shoes, too, where wool socks wouldn't be appropriate. You can also combine the tricks: thin socks first with wool socks on top. P.S. Really nice rugged looking boots!
