10 things I’ve done that you maybe have not

Via: Jafer (there under a slightly different name; my life’s so boring I don’t want to sound confident that no one has done any of these :) )

  1. Played a $100 000 grand piano in a church
  2. Asked the teacher for permission to be excused from a Spanish lesson to go to McDonald’s for a friend’s birthday
  3. Studied Farsi/Persian (and Finnish…! )
  4. Had an article published in a magazine (soon, and soon two)
  5. Ordered 20 000 Swiss francs’ worth of gold and silver wire from Switzerland (or something like that, but it was a lot of money)
  6. Sang at the opening of a health centre
  7. Had a nose piercing
  8. Liked cod-liver oil more than pancakes as a kid (that stuff is for Finns what Vegemite is for Aussies)
  9. Was voted weirdest girl in senior high
  10. Sat writing and troubleshooting MySQL queries and PHP for a web portfolio at 1:45 am
(ok, so I ran out of ideas…)

Here’s some extra cause people have done some of those:

  1. Had an electric shock while swimming in the lake during a thunder storm

Everything changes but me

Tom commented that he doesn’t like captcha images. Well, neither do I, but I hate spam more. Encouraged by the small amounts of spam going to Hades, I decided to remove the plugin. For the time being. Also, with the help of Paged Comment Editing and a little spam leftovers hack, spam management is much easier.

I tested out the Image Headlines plugin but it created such insane amounts of png files that I returned back to the trusty old TitleImages2. It may not have the ability to wrap too long lines (and I shouldn’t even write that long titles), but it’s simple and effective.

(Oh yes, the title is a reference to the oldie and goodie Take That song Everything Changes. I’m a fan forever, and not afraid to tell.)

You know you have too many fonts when…

I just updated my anti-virus program (cause the greedy ISP people require one license per computer in the same household, so when I installed the new one to my sister’s comp (she needs it more than I do, 6 viruses were found), mine stopped working. I fetched mine from University instead) and finally, service pack 2.

Boy was it a draaaaaag. (hmm, when have I said that before… oh yeah).

The start up took a long time, and when I finally got the blue screen of hopefullness, it looked — well — pretty exotic to say the least: Windows update

This has happened before. Windows using interesting choices of fonts, and I know it’s because I have sooooo many of them installed. I should get one of those programs that allow you to browse your uninstalled fonts and then temporarily load the ones you want to use.

Techiess

(trying to mean a female techie)

I’m recording the Survivor on my brand new DVD+VCR combo. The DVD is the writing kind so I’m testing it out while there’s a “backup” copy running upstairs on our “old” VCR (which was making smush out of the picture until Dad noticed a S-VHS setting).

Very exciting!

I’m a heavy user when it comes to recording. Not a day goes by that I don’t record something. That is why I’m excited about the writing DVD. The tapes I have get worn out pretty quickly, but then again, the DVDs are said to go (only?) 1000 recordings (or re-recordings). Or, maybe the tapes got worn out because of my old and crappy VCR. Who knows.

A VCR and a separate DVD+harddrive combo could’ve been pretty cool too, but that may have been a teensy bit too harsh on my bank account, especially when I have to buy storage space for my piles of tapes and DVDs that got evacuated from the recorder’s shelf.

Härpäke — (Fin.) something like ‘thingamabob’. My version: härpätin

The Dark and The Handsome

This guy (Dermot Mulroney) Dermot Mulroney or this guy (Rupert Everett) Rupert Everett was in my dream the other night. Now that I stare at them, I’m pretty sure it was Everett. Whoever it was, what on earth was he doing in my dream?! I haven’t seen either of them in movies in a long time. A moment ago I accidentally caught a glimpse of “My best friend’s wedding” on an Estonian channel and it reminded me of my dream.

Actually, whoever it was, welcome back some another night

(hey, now I can sneak a peek at these cutsies whenever I want ;) )

Nervous excitement

Mum (or any other relative), STOP READING! I’ll tell you in time :)
Here’s the secret I’ve been keeping for quite a while now. I can’t take it anymore!

Cheerful gratitude

I love helping at the WP Forums, but replies like this make the smile stay on my face a while longer: It’s so quiet at work. Everyone’s probably having a vacation and I’m here sitting, venturing into the world of telecommunication cables…

Crash a violinist

This morning I noticed that a famous Finnish violinist got on the bus (with his girlfriend, tsk tsk, they were all lovey-dovey — ohoy! yellow press! ). When he was getting off the bus, the driver almost crushed him with the doors! Whoops.

Later, when I was standing at the tram stop I noticed a box for skates and remembered what I saw last week: An elderly woman walked briskly to the bench, sat down and tore open a box of figure-skates, and threw the torn box to the corner on the right. I went as far as to suspect she’d stolen the skates and getting rid of the evidence. I don’t know. I really don’t.

As a side note: just finished reading Angels and Demons during the break at today’s digital media techniques, and started reading Digital Fortress right away.

Forum-illiteracy

It’s amazing how some people don’t seem to read what’s been written before they reply to a thread. Just check out this thread at the WP Forums, and see how this Deborah is trying to help… Also, Lorelle was being very helpful, too (she does reply to a lot of threads so I’m sure that was a temporary lapse).

Greedy little…

A lot of the time when people post their site links for others to see at “Strut your own stuff” (I’m talking about WP forums), pretty soon someone will write “that’s cool/beautiful/nice/awesome/the best layout I’ve ever seen!! Do you have it for download?/Please make it available ASAP!!!1”

What if the person has worked their butt off to get a beautiful, ORIGINAL, DISTINCTIVE layout? What if they don’t want to stumble across a clone everywhere they turn? Some people have miles and miles of themes in their theme switcher (right next to the miles and miles of blogs they apparently read), and they add to the list practically every theme they can get their hands on.

I know I’m being too hard on people who don’t have the knowledge/patience/interest to do their own themes but that is my opinion and this is my blog!

Disclaimer: This writing is by no means affected by the fact that I’ve been doing my portfolio layout for hours and hours (loving it though, but the theme pleads — in a wrong place — are a pet peeve). I might modify the layout to fit here, too  It could be an invigorating change.
