Travel preparations

The most important thing to pack is of course an eTravelogue! I was planning on blogging from Australia but then my domain expired and I’m stuck between hosts. I’ll have to settle for a hosted blog where I don’t have a say over what my blog looks like. Agh.

Oh well, the main thing is I’ll remember what I did in Australia after my feet have lifted off the ground on February 25th and the whole trip is over. And that is what this blog [my blog at WordPress.com] is for.

We live in uncertain times

I’m switching web hotel providers — hopefully — but no one has bothered to fill me in on what’s going on. I hope I’m going to be in the middle so that I know when to back up for the last time (I back up every time I change something so it doesn’t really matter).

Today I noticed the server is working v e e e r y s l o o o w l y — I was uploading a plugin but it was going so slowly that I cancelled it. (False alarm, seems to be fine now.) I’ve requested termination of this place for 21st/22nd and the new place is waiting for information to be able to do the switch but I haven’t heard from the old provider. (Except for a support email asking that I’d send my termination request to one of their other email addresses. Hm, I wonder where the support’s ‘forward mail’ button is located…) 22nd is getting close and I’m afraid something will happen to the domain. They better get this sorted out soon because I don’t want to have to deal with this from Australia.

Turning 25 brought out the Elvis in me

I’ve had a little muscle tic on my upper lip all day. It feels pretty annoying…

Anyway, today at 1:23 pm I turned 25 — quarter of a century. The moment the clock hit 1:23 my face fell down and my joints started aching, very bizarre. ;) Well, no, only my knee’s been acting up today.

I’m now closer to 30 than 20. At first it felt like “oh no, I don’t have time to do much more” but that’s just because I hardly remember what I did last year, let alone 5-10-15… years ago (I’m only a bit farther evolved than the goldfish).

I’ll turn in for the night now. See, the age’s getting to me already! Actually I’m just a little disappointed that I can’t play the night away because tomorrow’s a workday.

Happy pre-birthday to me!

I went shopping today in order to find some summery(-ish) clothes for Australia (and in general, too). I actually did find clothes: a dark purple lightweight shirt, a red/gold striped shirt and a white shirt. Now, all I have to do is find strappy tops to wear with those. I still have to find something festive, but I have 3 weeks left.

While I was relocating myself from one clothes store to another I walked by a gamestore with big SALE signs at the door. Well, of course I had to go in. Guess what I got? Splinter Cell Double Agent! (I had to call Dad to make sure he hadn’t bought it for me.) I just installed it and luckily Twin Peaks, which is on tonight, is re-run tomorrow so I can start playing right away. Ahhhhh. Or should I wait till my birthday? Naaah.

N73 in use: Themes and applications

Here’s some information on the applications I’ve installed as well as some theme places I stalk in order to find The Perfect Theme.

Applications

Most of these are freeware.

Lifeblog
(Pre-installed) Lifeblog logs your messages and media (photos, videos, sound), and you can add your own notes, too. I don’t use the mobile application at the moment because I haven’t figured out how to moblog to WordPress with it, but Lifeblog is very handy in transferring the logged items to the computer.
Y-Browser
A file explorer. The search seems to be working very swiftly.
Omat Lahdot
Timetables for the capital city area (Helsinki, that is). You can save a list of bus stops/stations and filter out all unnecessary lines.
Screenshot
Take a screenshot of a lovely theme or a horrible-looking user interface
Opera Mini
A browser that filters out the blingbling on sites for easier viewing on a small screen and smaller load to data transfer. I like the built-in browser better though.
Nokia Search (unofficially out)
Search messages, emails, calendar, to-do, contacts, notes, and other files. Available for download at Symbian Freak for example.
Calcium
Simple calculator but it’s much easier and faster to use than the built-in calculator.
Trivial Pursuit Genus Edition
Not freeware. Bought this via the N73 Services on Download!.

Themes

I’m currently using Clarity by Submarine (Clarity Wine variation). It has some blue in popups but I can live with that. The colours are very clear and the red is wonderful.

Theme - Clarity Wine

I check the following theme places daily:
MobileThemes.com Forum thread “Upload your 3rd Edition themes here!”
MobileThemes.com themes
Mobile9 theme gallery
4urMobilePhone

New site
Zedge.net » Themes

Please note that for some reason some people want to look at naked women (etc.) on their phone screen, so those theme places may contain NSFW (not safe for work) images. They do censor some theme previews but not nearly enough.

Some of the uploaded themes, particularly at Mobile9 and MobileThemes’s general upload section (not the forum post), have been created using online resources which may add icons and other “advertisements”.

Got me some shades

Got myself some eye protection for the Oz trip (not the prison):

Sunglasses, Matrix style

Nike Dawson P. It was just one of those “gotta-get-those at first sight” moments. (They were just the nicest ones in that selection… I’m not much of a shop-hopper except when I’m trying to find the best price for a computer game.) They’re light, thin-framed, and neutral. Just like me! Except for the lightness… and thinness… and neutrality, too, I guess.

Wandering virus

You’d better protect yourself — by locking your computer when you leave the keyboard for even a second. If you don’t, a nasty computer virus may walk by and select you as its next victim.

Nasty computer virus

(It says “Hahaa!!! Your computer’s been infected by a virus!!! You’re a dead man!!!”)

That’s not my screen, though; I always lock my computer.

2 hours to go

There’s about 2 hours to go of this year. What do you remember about it? What did you do?

I probably don’t remember anything — I never do. I do remember starting project managing in -March and after that it’s been quite a ride (with ). I also remember being very happy at work and .

N73 in use: Silence of the Multimedia key

On the right side of the keypad there is a special key, the so-called Multimedia key where you can add four more shortcuts. Unfortunately it makes an awful noise when pressed which is why I never use it.

I’ve tried silencing it: I’ve looked for a sound file to delete (no luck), I’ve tried making the settings the same as in Beep or Silence mode where the Multimedia key is silent (no luck). Well, now I swapped my own profile with the Beep profile and I finally get a silent Multimedia key!

Is there really no other way to get the key to SHUT UP except for this “hack”?

[Edit Jan 20th] Boy, do I feel stupid now. Thanks to Antony for commenting and pointing out that there is a simple option for turning the sounds off:

Turn off Multimedia key sounds

Shh, can you hear that? Neither can I! Oh sweet silence. I go hide in my n00b hole now…

Beautiful World

Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas!

I got Tomb Raider Legend to play and Take That’s “Beautiful World” CD to listen to. I had asked Mum for the CD and when I didn’t find it from her presents, I was quite disappointed. But Dad had bought it instead after Mum had told him I’d asked for it. :)

I also got money (instead of a gift card to a bookstore) so I’ll go buy “Lisey’s Story” (Stephen King) on Wednesday. I saw it a while ago but I didn’t want to buy it before Christmas, just in case. No one gave it to me so I’ll have to buy it now! (People don’t usually buy me books they know I want because I’ve most likely bought them already…)

I also got a nice business-like bag from Mum, a 1 Gb USB memory stick from Dad, “Silence of the Lambs” from my sister (I was going to buy it but she wanted to give it to me), dishes and things like that. I got a cute little notebook from a friend of mine whom I saw yesterday and I was looking at notebooks because I thought I’d like something like that for Australia. Good thing I didn’t find one I liked! The one I got is just perfect to carry around in Australia (I’ll need to write down everything because otherwise I’ll forget).

Hmm, maybe I’ll try Tomb Raider now. I get to listen to the CD a lot because I’ll copy it to my phone.

What did you get for Christmas?
